It was a cool morning in Évora when Duarte awoke with an unusual thought: he would be a hero. Not just any hero, but the most daring hero Portugal had ever known.
Duarte was thirty-two years old, with no special training, no legendary sword, just excessive courage and a great tendency to get into trouble.
That day, a curious message appeared on his cell phone:
“Hero Duarte, the city needs you. The Last Sardine has been stolen. Get it back or Portugal will be left without joy. — The Secret Council of Sardines.”
Duarte didn’t hesitate. He donned his most “heroic” coat, grabbed a backpack with sandwiches and custard tarts, and set off on his most unlikely mission.
The Invitation to Madness
In the central café of Évora, Duarte found three unlikely companions:
-
Lucia , a history teacher with a passion for riddles.
-
João , a mechanic with an infinite imagination and a fear of cats.
-
Tiago , a Spanish tourist who claimed to speak Portuguese “perfectly” — but rarely got it right.
Duarte explained the mission dramatically: “The Last Sardine is the symbol of our joy. Without it, Portugal is in danger!”
Lucy laughed, John almost spilled his coffee, and James said, “Is this like a treasure hunt? I love treasures!”
That’s how the team began their adventure, full of laughter, doubts and an absurd goal.
The First Clue and the First Mistake
The first clue was on an old mural near Praça do Giraldo. The graffiti read: “The guiding light is where fado meets the sun.”
Duarte, ever bold, decided the clue meant they should go to Lisbon, because “Lisbon is where fado lives and the sun shines.”
Lúcia wanted to investigate further, João was more interested in the corner café, and Tiago wanted to take selfies with the graffiti.
The decision was unanimous: follow Lisbon. However, Duarte forgot to check the map. Result? They ended up in Faro.
The confusion turned into general laughter, and Duarte swore: “A hero never retreats, only changes course.”
Lisbon and the Comedy of Fado
When they finally arrived in Lisbon, the group headed straight for the Alfama neighborhood. Amidst narrow streets and the sounds of Portuguese guitars, they searched for the clue.
Lúcia found an old fado written on a wall: “Lost sardines are stolen joy. Look where the river embraces the sea.”
Duarte was convinced this meant Cais do Sodré. João just wanted to eat bifanas, and Tiago suggested going to Cascais because “the sea is more beautiful there.”
Amidst arguments, laughter, and detours, they ended up singing fado in a small Alfama tavern, surrounded by curious customers. It was such an absurd situation that even Duarte had to laugh.
It was then that they found an envelope hidden behind an old guitar. Inside was a hand-drawn map labeled “Lost Laughter Beach . “
The Beach of Lost Laughter
Following the trail, they traveled to the west coast of Portugal. They arrived at Praia do Riso Perdido, a place no one seemed to officially know.
The beach was strangely beautiful: golden sand, crystal-clear water, and seagulls that seemed to sing.
While searching for the lost sardine, Duarte decided to test the team’s courage. He suggested they cross a lagoon to find the next clue. João hesitated, Lúcia worried, and Tiago laughed: “Let’s do it, it’s an epic mission!”
The result was a disastrous crossing: João fell into the water, Duarte got caught in a net, and Tiago started singing as he swam. Everyone ended up wet, but happy.
In the midst of the confusion, they found a chest buried in the sand with another clue: “Follow where the wind dances with the sea.”
The Cape of Crazy Wind
The trail led them to Cape Espichel, known for its cliffs and intense winds. There, Duarte decided they should camp and plan the final leg of their mission.
It was a night filled with laughter, tall tales, and failed attempts to light a fire. João brought marshmallows, Tiago brought an out-of-tune guitar, and Lúcia brought old maps.
In the morning, they headed to the top of the cliffs. The wind was so strong it nearly swept away Duarte’s backpack. It was there that they found a small, hidden cave.
Inside the cave, there was a box with a note: “The bold hero finds the sardine where the laughter never ends.”
Duarte looked at the team, smiled, and said, “I think we’re reaching the end. Or the beginning of something even crazier.”
The Hilarious Outcome
Following the final clue, the team arrived at a small island just offshore. It was a magical place: surrounded by high waves and noisy seagulls, with small, colorful huts.
In the center of the island was an ancient market where an old man sold dried fish. Duarte approached and asked, “Do you have the Last Sardine?”
The man smiled and replied: “The Last Sardine is a legend… but the real treasure is the journey you took.”
At that moment, Duarte realized the mission wasn’t to find a sardine, but to live an adventure.
Everyone laughed. João ate dried sardines, Lúcia wrote everything down in her notebook, Tiago took selfies, and Duarte proclaimed, “Mission accomplished!”
They returned to the village as unlikely heroes, with hilarious stories to tell.
The Fearless Hero
Months later, Duarte was still remembered as the village’s “Fearless Hero.” The story of the Last Sardine became a legend told amid laughter and song.
Duarte knew that true courage lay not in achieving the impossible, but in accepting the opportunity to laugh at oneself, even in the most absurd situations.
And so, Portugal gained a new story to tell: the story of the daring hero, of crazy situations and of eternal laughter.
